Pokemon of the Week: Charizard

posted by Eraleas on Tue, 2005-02-15 22:16

General info

Type
Fire/Flying
Ability
Blaze (Fire moves are multiplied by 1.5 when HP are below 1/3rd)
Base Stats
  • HP: 78
  • Attack: 84
  • Defense: 78
  • Special Attack: 109
  • Special Defense: 85
  • Speed: 100
Description

The famous and overused Charizard, never disliked by any trainer! He’s cool –or should I say hot?-, has nice Base Stats and a variety of moves. He excels in battles against Grass and Bug types but can give a punch or two when it comes to his disadvantages, Water, Electricity and Rock due to his wide movepool which mainly focuses on physical attacks and Fire based techniques. Watch out however, for his HP since both of his Defenses are not particularly high.

Role #1: Physical Sweeper

Item Held
Salac Berry (raises Speed when HP are low)/Liechi Berry (raises Attack when HP are low)
Nature
Jolly (+Speed –Special Attack)/Adamant (+Attack –Special Attack)
Effort Points
252 Attack, 252 Speed, 6 Any
Moveset
  • Swords Dance/Dragon Dance/Belly Drum
  • Earthquake
  • Aerial Ace
  • Rock Slide
Strategy

This strategy focuses on attacking the opponent as fast as you can with all of your powers. It’s obvious -looking at the natures proposed and the EV allocation- that Charizard has to get the most out of his speed and attack. You are given the choice between three different boosting attacks:

  • Swords Dance which will double your Attack stat, triple it the second time used, then quadruple it
  • Dragon Dance which will multiply tour Speed and Attack stat by 1.5 each time you use it
  • Belly Drum which will quadruple your Attack Stat, activate Salac Berry which will further boost your Speed stat and activate Blaze

After boosting yourself with the chosen move, sweep by using the reliable Earthquake and Aerial Ace attacks, the later also receiving STAB by Charizard’s dual type nature. Use Rock Slide only against Flying types as this technique is less reliable. If you absolutely want a Fire type move, try Overheat which could work well with this moveset

Role #2: Special Sweeper

Item Held
Petaya Berry (raises Special Attack when HP are low)
Nature
Timid (+Speed –Attack)/Modest (+Special Attack –Attack)
Effort Points
252 Speed, 252 Special Attack, 6 Any
Moveset
  • Dragon Claw
  • Flamethrower
  • Bite
  • Hidden Power Special
Strategy

Focus on Charizard’s Special Attack and Speed and light you shall see! Dragon Claw, Flamethrower and Bite are all strong and reliable most of the time. The last move is a filler, probably a Special Hidden Power such as Grass, Psychic or Water. Petaya Berry is to increase Charizard’s Special Attack in case he runs low of Hit Points. Salac Berry is also an option, to raise his Speed further on.

Egg Moves

These are the moves Charmander can learn through breeding with Pokémon of the Dragon and/or Monster Egg Group, and the Pokémon it can get them from.

Rock Slide
Larvitar/Pupitar/Tyranitar
Bite
Squirtle/Wartortle/Blastoise, Ekans/Arbok, Kangaskhan, Gyarados, Totodile/Croconaw/Feraligatr, Larvitar/Pupitar/Tyranitar, Seviper or Bagon/Shelgon/Salamence
Outrage
Dratini/Dragonair/Dragonite
Ancientpower
Corsola to Totodile
Belly Drum
Snorlax
Beat Up
Sneasel to Ekans
Dragon Dance
Horsea/Seadra/Kingdra, Gyarados or Altaria

Training Grounds

This section is to advise you on the areas in which you can train for the acquisition of the Effort Points presented above. It is recommended you use 10 vitamins on the stat you desire to raise. Do not use vitamins on stats that require less than 100 Effort Points. Equip the Macho Brace to your Pokemon to speed up the process even more.

Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald

Contests

Item Held
Blue Scarf
Contest Moveset
Sunny Day [Beauty]
Overheat [Beauty]
Aerial Ace [Cool]
Flamethrower [Beauty] or Swords Dance [Beauty]

The Charmander family is clearly suited for Beauty Contests as are most of Fire type Pokemon. The above moveset concentrates on the use of Sunny Day+Overheat. However, both are risky: Sunny Day’s appeal is determined by the crowd’s excitement, wether Overheat might hurt you more than it will help you: it gives away 6 appeal points (double after using Sunny Day) but leaves you more vulnerable to opponents, who can subtract twice the number after a jam. Flamethrower or even Ember give 4 appeal points and are more reliable. Aerial Ace is there to use in case you are first to appeal. I will not pinpoint you the moment you should use Aerial Ace, since its use is completely optional

More precisely

  • If you appeal 1st:
    • Round 1: Aerial Ace
    • Round 2: Sunny Day
    • Round 3: Flamethrower/Overheat (prefer Overheat if you are the last to appeal)
    • Round 4: Sunny Day
    • Round 5: Flamethrower/Overheat (prefer Overheat if you are the last to appeal)
  • If you appeal 2nd, 3rd or last:
    • Round 1:Flamethrower/Overheat (prefer Overheat if you are the last to appeal)
    • Round 2: Sunny Day
    • Round 3: Flamethrower/Overheat (prefer Overheat if you are the last to appeal)
    • Round 4: Sunny Day
    • Round 5: Flamethrower/Overheat (prefer Overheat if you are the last to appeal)

Useful Links: If you are not familiar with game language used above, read through the Stats & Training Guide, the Team Building Guide and the Egg Group Guide. More guides shall be added soon to help you out. If you have suggestions on additional movesets for either Battles or Contests, please post them in the Comments section. I will then evaluate them and probably add some of them, giving you credit.

Charizard is my favorite pokemon of all time!

DistrictCharizard @ 01/04/2007 at 02:06:17 am

Charizard, in my opinion, is the most resourceful of the three first-generation starters. What I mean by this is that it can lern a very wide variety of moves that can take advantage of almost any occasion. Also, it is able to survive through numerous attacks, no matter what type Pokémon is attacking it (except Rock). To me, Charizard is the ultimate starter of any generation and my personal favorite Pokémon of all time.

Latias @ 13/04/2007 at 04:16:22 pm

My level 100 latias got whooped very badle (in one attack by)
a level 67 charizard, it didn't have a particuly good moveset, I very nerly killed it, but it used overheat at the last second.

gian @ 18/05/2007 at 06:38:58 pm

Pokemon Master @ 31/05/2007 at 05:40:42 am

My level 100 knows:

BlastBurn

And for some reason it is water resistant in other words water does not hurt it more than 15 hp no matter what the attack same thing with my Blaziken too.

James @ 10/06/2007 at 06:36:39 pm

The reason I like Charizard is, because Charizard is tough. I even have a Pokemon card named Charizard! My card has Fire Spin with 100 HP damage!

courts @ 17/06/2007 at 07:20:07 pm

my charizard has this move called

sacrifice.

how to get it.in the origin cave. it is invisable so use the itemfinder.its a 1 hit ko move.

DragonTrainer @ 12/07/2007 at 03:12:31 am

My favorite set of moves for Charizard is Blat Burn, Wing Attack/Fly, Earthquake, and Rock Slide. I always pick charizard since it's metal claw is good for the first gym and is good later on as well with the variety of moves. I like the shiny version of Charizard. I have one on my Pokemon Diamond but i don't use it. Like my name says, i have dragon pokemon like Giratina, Salamence, Rayquaza, and Dialga but only use one at a time due to the common weaknesses.

Dragon Rider Rey @ 27/07/2007 at 05:31:41 pm

When my Charizard was a Charmander I pass three GYM's with him, then in the forth GYM batle it evolve into a charmilion. Me and my Charmilion batle in the ultimate GYM. That was FANTASTIC! my Charmilion evolve into Charizard. Carizard and I and my other's dragons pass the POKÉMON LIGE 4 times. My Charizard have the ATK.'s: Blast Burn, Sismic Toss, Fire Blast and Dragon Rage.

visitor @ 14/09/2007 at 11:11:26 pm

Charizar is all what good sweeper has to be: fast and strong + it got stats boosting moves belly drum being the main one. If you can make belly drum/rest combo work Charizard will become unstopable killing machine, which ripes teams apart.

noctowl123 @ 01/12/2007 at 09:17:06 pm

my bro has charizard it know flamethrower fire blast overheat and blast burn

dragon master red @ 01/12/2007 at 10:03:33 pm

i just love charizard!one of my best dragons! taught it earthquake, heat wave, outrage, wing attack/fly

jairus @ 19/01/2008 at 09:59:42 am

CHARIZARD is my favorite pokemon because its powerful and nice!!

Skywing_84 @ 29/02/2008 at 07:49:24 pm

Omg, Charizard is the whole reason I beat the Battle Tower so well. Mine had a lonely nature, but i didn't really count for any EV's. If i did, it'd be even better than it is now.

Charizard @ Salac Berry
Lonely Nature
Attacks:
Earthquake
Double-Edge
Belly Drum
Flamethrower

You'll have to breed for Belly Drum, and then teach it Double-Edge and Earthquake. You can use a TM of Flamethrower if you want

First, use Belly Drum to max out CHarizard's Attack Stat. Assuming that you didn't take too much damage (assuming they used a set up move or have switched), then use Double-Edge to bring your own HP down a bit, activating Salac Berry. Then, go ahead and sweep with a max power Earthquake and Blazed-STABed Flamethrower. Even if you can't use Double-Edge (you're afraid the recoil will kill yourself) you can still hit with Earthquake.

Hope This Helped!

Conor @ 10/07/2008 at 04:47:17 am

My charizard is just pure fire. It knows overheat, blast burn, flamethrower and heat wave. Even though it is weak against water, it packs quite a punch with blast burn. Like blastoise in fire red…blast burn did better than my nidoking's thunderolt…weird huh?

Altema @ 19/07/2008 at 02:14:03 pm

In my opinion, the Best Charizard is this:

Charizard@Salac Berry
Trait:Blaze
Nature: Adamant
Moveset-
Fire Punch
Belly Drum
Earthquake
Flare Blitz/Substitute

Fairly Straightforward, but exceptionally effective, no?

jacob @ 07/08/2008 at 04:42:10 pm

my charizard knows : blast burn, mega kick, fly and flame thrower!(lol)
