As one of the Fire Red and Leaf Green starters, Blastoise cannot be too bad; he has very high defenses which make him an ideal Tank for your team. He could have a better Special Attack stat to be called a Special Sweeper but still has a Special Attack of 85 which can give it the power to inflict some serious damage. He isn’t too fast but not too slow either. In overall, a good Pokémon with a variable moveset.
Role: Tank
- Item Held
- Leftovers
- Nature
- Calm (+Special Defense –Attack)/Bold (+Defense –Attack)
- Effort Points
- 6 HP, 252 Defense, 252 Special Defense
- Moveset
-
- Surf
- Rest/Refresh
- Yawn/ Haze
- Mirror Coat/Toxic/Yawn
Strategy
It isn’t a standard set; it completely depends on what you want to have. Prefer Surf over Hydro Pump since it is more accurate and has more Power Points. Pick either Rest or Refresh to get rid of status conditions. Rest will also recover your Hit Points and Leftovers will protect you will asleep. Pick either Haze or Yawn to pseudohaze the opponent (since he might probably switch to avoid falling asleep). Finally, Mirror Coat to get rid of those Grass and Electric types who come out and blast you with their forces (you’ll probably survive the hit so get them back!). If you dislike Mirror Coat make your choice between Toxic or Yawn (if you don’t have it already).
Egg Moves
These are the moves Squirtle can learn through breeding with Pokémon of the Monster and/or Water I Egg Group, and the Pokémon it can get them from.

Training Grounds
This section is to advise you on the areas in which you can train for the acquisition of the Effort Points presented above. It is recommended you use 10 vitamins on the stat you desire to raise. Do not use vitamins on stats that require less than 100 Effort Points. Equip the Macho Brace on your Pokémon to speed up the process even more.

Contests
- Item Held
- Pink Scarf
- Contest Moveset 1
- Yawn [Cute]
- Rest [Cute]
- Tail Whip [Cute]
- Water Gun [Cute]
- Item Held
- Blue Scarf
- Contest Moveset 2
- Rain Dance [Tough]
- Hydro Pump [Beauty]
- Surf [Beauty]
- Dive [Beauty]
The Squirtle family is clearly not too suited for contests since its moves do not give away too many appeal points. However, 2 different Contest movesets are viable; a Cute and a Beauty one. When using the Cute Contest moveset, be sure to take advantage of the Yawn+Rest combo. In case you need more appeal points, use Water Gun and make use of Tail Whip when you are the last to appeal. Now, if you decide to use the Beauty Contest moveset, use either the Surf+Dive combo or the Rain Dance+Hydro Pump combo; the first one is based on pure luck since Surf’s appeal depends on the previous appeal and the second one simply has Rain Dance which isn’t a Beauty type move. Since the sets and the choices are not standard, I cannot guide you precisely; you’ll have to figure out the way to victory all by yourselves!
Useful Links: If you are not familiar with game language used above, read through the Stats & Training Guide, the Team Building Guide and the Egg Group Guide. More guides shall be added soon to help you out. If you have suggestions on additional movesets for either Battles or Contests, please post them in the Comments section. I will then evaluate them and probably add some of them, giving you credit.

Yes indeed Phanpy is very cute and don't worry too much about the fact that you're a guy and use cute Pokemon; I'm a guy as well and I have used many cute Pokemon through the years, just because I liked them, not because they're strong. I'll describe Phanpy and Donphan when time comes.

I thought i would say this so trainers wouldnt get confused… Blastoise is a great pokemon and there is a great combo above but it also contains illegal movesets. I.e. a few moves CANT be in combination together cause it's impossible to breed them.
Those combos are:
1. Haze with either Mirror coat or Refresh.
2. Yawn with either Mirror coat or Refresh.
Haze and Yawn CAN go together. Mirror coat and Refresh CAN go together. But there CANT be a combination of either 2 sets cause it's unobtainable through breeding. (U might be able to change this with a Gameshark or action replay but then thats just cheating :P)
If u try it out on Netbattle, some of those moves above cant go together and it's ashame since they make a good combo. I would love to have a Blastoise with Refresh, Mirror coat, Haze and Surf.

Blastoise is my first favorite in the world. I like it because it is a strong poke'mon and I think it is very intelligent and kind. I like Pikachu and Zigzagoon too, they're very cute and cuddly. I like Blastoise's strategy.
Fenix @ 20/02/2007, 07:32:58 am
Personally my Blastoise moveset is Surf/roar/icebeam/mirror coat.
i dont see any necessety of a status healer(burn is nothing, paralyze isnt very important due to Blastoise speed and you can still switch/aromatherapy/heal bell for toxic)
oh and you mispelled "while" "will" in line 3 of the strategy.

James @ 04/06/2009, 04:24:31 pm
Blastoise is the best starter in my opinion.it has many strengths and very few weaknesses(electric, grass) compared 2 charizard + venasuar.
The best moveset for this pokemon to deal with any type is:
Surf(accurate + powerful)
Hydro Pump(powerful + dont have to skip a turn like Hydro Cannon)
Icebeam(powerful, accurate + takes care of grass and dragon types)
Earthquake(powerful, accurate + takes care of electrics)
if you want to use earthquake on another pokemon or already have, bite is a good sub.its strong enough + lots of pp and kills phychics and Ghosts!Electric pokemon are not known for their sp. def so any of those moves should k.o if you have a decent sp. att!
The best natures(in my opinion) are:
Modest(+ sp. att - att)(earthquake will still destroy any electric)
Quiet(+ sp. att - speed)(his speed dosnt really matter coz of his wicked defense!)
Out of the two of these, modest is best suited(just to keep his speed high)
The best items for Blastoise to hold are:
mystic water to boost his sp. att(along with Torrent)
Quick Claw(if you want him to strike first)
or even Leftovers!
Dont worry about a salac berry as mystic water is just as good!
Blastoise can beat every pokemon with this combination(if there same levels), and can be used as a sp. sweeper/tank/ general powerhouse!
If you want to EV train your blastoise, i recommend:
Sp.att(the gastlys + haunters in lavender)
Sp.def(tentacools + tentacruels anywher you can surf)
Long Live Blastoise!
