Normal Type
The Nature of Normal
What is normal? Clearly, Normal is not an element but simply a state of being of a living or non-living item. It’s whatever is being kept in balance in terms of logic and physics. For instance, it’s not something too hot or too cold, too hard or too soft, too slow or too rapid, too big or too small; it’s everything in between! Normal is what is called the state of an item which is believed to balance between generally imposed beliefs, usually compared to the human kind. For example, the water could have a normal temperature for the human kind when it doesn’t exceed what the main body receiver, the skin, affords. So balance it is, and we shall see that this is also a fact that has been replicated into the Pokémon games as well!
Normal in the Games
As one from a total of seventeen elemental types in the Pokémon games, Normal is considered to be the base of all, as its category includes a vast number of moves which have many, various and interesting effects, as well as many Pokémon. Thus, Normal is a type which could easily bear the title of the most versatile type in the games. It belongs in the category of the Physical types.
Normal Type Pokémon
- Resist
- None
- Are Weak to
- Are Immune to
HP Attack Defense Sp.Atk Sp.Def Speed
As you can see from above, Normal Type Pokémon are weak to only one type (Fighting) and are immune to another (Ghost). Due to this fact, no resistances have been given to it, although this is often good as only the Defenses of the Pokémon are taken into account when determining final damage and nothing else (such as Effective or Not Very Effective hits). They are characterized by the big amount of Hit Points they usually have, as well as the good Attacking and Defensive stats. Briefly, they are very balanced Pokémon.
Normal Type Pokémon do not fall under a particular Egg Group; the most common are Ground, Fairy and Flying. However, they are able to learn many types of attacks, including the majority of all other Physical and Special types; that is the reason why Normal types are so versatile.
Normal Pokémon List
There is a total of 62 Pokémon species out of 386 that belong to the Normal Type; 47 of them are pure Normal Types, while the rest, have Normal as their primary type.

Normal Type Attacks
- Are Super Effective against
- None
- Are Not Very Effective against
- Have No Effect against
Normal Type attacks perform well in battle as only two types resist them; Rock and Steel. With an array of various effects, Normal Type moves can deal high amounts of damage to most of the types, particularly if used by Pokémon with a high Attack stat as well as with the Same Type Attack Bonus that Normal Types obtain, as this will increase the damage dealt to even highest levels.
Normal attacks usually utilize the user’s body parts in order to attack, such as claws (Slash, Scratch, Fury Swipes), head (Headbutt), arm or foot (Mega Punch, Mega Kick), tail (Slam) or even the whole body mass (Body Slam, Tackle). There are also attacks that manipulate a “pure” type of energy; these are Hyper Beam and Tri Attack.
Normal Type Attack List
Out of a total of 354 attacks so far, 137 of them fall under this category. This means that almost the 2/5 of the total amount of attacks are of the Normal Type!

Other Popular Normal Pokémon
Either because they are unique or few, these Pokémon have been appearing into the games outside wild Pokémon areas and/or marked the game’s history.
Sometimes blocking the ways towards Fuschia and at other times the Diglett Cave entrance, having fallen asleep after a nutritious lunch, Snorlax is a Pokémon that could never be caught in wild areas and that forced the player to find a way to wake it up, fight with it and capture it, namely, using a soul-soothing lullaby. Often holding the overused but extremely useful item, Leftovers, Snorlax hasn’t changed through the ages too much, not until now. Snorlax has finally a baby form commonly known as Munchlax! We are still waiting to see how Munchlax will be conceived and how it will evolve, in the upcoming games for the Nintendo DS, Diamond and Pearl.
Uncommon and mysterious, Eevee has always been found on the top floor room of the building in Celadon City in Kanto and could, in no way, be captured in the wild. This fact always made Eevee unique as well as its ability to initially evolve with the use of an elemental stone, into one of three different Pokémon, all of which were not of the Normal Type or the same type as each other. These are Vaporeon, the Water Type, Jolteon the Electric Type and Flareon, the Fire Type evolution. With the Metal Generation and the breeding system coming out, Eevee was not only able to breed and create more of its kind, but two more evolutions made their appearance this time around, based on Tameness/Friendship, namely, Espeon, the Psychic type and Umbreon, the Dark type evolution. Still, Eevee is a rare sight, and has never been available in the wild up until now. Eevee and evolutions can be also found in the Gamecube games, Colosseum and Extra Dimension as a starter apart from the Fire Red and Leaf Green versions.
The first human-created Pokémon, the virtual Porygon is able to travel freely through Cyberspace. Its creators, the scientists of Silph CO. which HQ is located in Saffron City in Kanto, had been kidnapped in their very own building by members of the infamous Team Rocket as their malevolent leader, Giovanni wished to obtain Silph’s technology for himself! Theoretically speaking, Giovanni obtained a number of these creatures and placed them as prizes for a plentiful of coins in the Game Corner of Celadon City, which he used as a base of operations. With exclusive moves such as Conversion, Porygon was one very unique Pokémon at the time being. With the Metal Generation coming out, Porygon could evolve into a new Pokémon, Porygon2 with the use of an update program, namely Upgrade which transformed the old Porygon into a brand new, similar looking Pokémon, slightly more curved! With new moves such as Lock-On and Zap Cannon, Coversion 2 and others, Porygon was surely upgraded! Even now, in the Advanced Generation, Porygon is as rare as before, eventhough it may breed with the use of Ditto and “copy” its program, creating offspring. Finally, keep in mind that Porygon2 possesses the highest Special Attack stat among all Normal Type Pokémon, which is in fact, a Physical type.
Initially known for its unique ability to copy another Pokémon’s appearance and moves, Ditto was indeed one rare and distinctive creature, although trainers did not include it into their teams all that often as Ditto’s “Transform” permitted to only have five power points of the copied Pokémon’s current moves. When the Metal Generation series came out, Ditto obtained a much greater role in the games. Being genderless, Ditto was able to breed with all non-legendary male, female or genderless creatures, thus many rare Pokémon such as the starters were able to create more of their kind! Ditto was also packed with its very unique item, Metal Powder which boosted its Defense. At the time being, there had also been a way to obtain a shiny Ditto, which proved to raise the chances of a shiny hatchling! Ditto is nowadays an indispensable Pokémon for breeders and can only be caught in Fire Red or Leaf Green versions, a reason many people bought the game among other reasons.
Appearing in the second generation games, Togepi was the Pokémon growing inside the “Mystery Egg” that the player character had to retrieve for Professor Elm from Mr. Pokémon at the very beginning of the game. Later on, after defeating the first Gym Leader, Falkner, Professor Elm’s assistant arrived and entrusted the character with the Egg which would after many steps hatch into Togepi. Togepi was officially the first Pokémon to hatch from an Egg, not only in the games but in the animé as well. Togepi’s evolution, Togetic, was also an example of the new system of evolution based on Friendship/Tameness.
Nowadays, an egg containing Togepi can be obtained in Fire Red and Leaf Green versions, on Five Island. A Shadow Togepi can also be found in Pokémon XD, given to the player by a scientist in order to purify it and if the player desires, trade it for an Elekid. Togepi can also appear in the GCN game, Super Smash Bros Melee, coming out of a Pokéball and using Metronome with various outcomes such as Night Shade and Earthquake.
Another man-made Pokémon, Castform was created by the scientists of the Weather Institute in Hoenn, located on Route 119, as an experiment for weather forecast and manipulation. With a mutable anatomy and the ability to change into one of its other three forms -for a total of four- depending on the current weather, Castform gains a place into the list of one of the most unique Pokémon! Apart from the physical changes, Castform’s Type also changes accordingly as does its signature move, Weather Ball which, despite its mediocre base attack of 50, can reach an impressive 225 under the right conditions!
More precisely, in strong sunlight -that is the effects of Sunny Day- Casform changes into a Fire Type as does its Weather Ball. During Rain Dance, both Pokémon and move change into a Water Type, while under the effects of Hail into an Ice Type. Finally, Sandstorm does not change Castform’s appearance or type but its Weather Ball does become a Rock Type move.
The player can obtain a Castform by the scientists of the Weather Institute, after defeating Team Aqua or Team Magma (depending on the game version) during his journey through Hoenn.
Often blocking the passages between Fortree City and Route 120 in Hoenn, the “Invisible Object” was made visible with the help of a device developed by Devon and given to the character by Steven Stone. The creature is none other than the mysterious Kecleon a Pokémon that has the Color Swap ability which allows it to alter its type to the type of the move that last damaged it in battle. Often using the move Skill Swap in its moveset, it usually takes advantage of its own ability in order to defeat the opponent. Kecleon is also encountered in the Battle Tower and often makes use of Trick and Choice Band, tricking the opponent into damaging it with the same move type every turn, usually resulting into “Not Super Effective” hits.
Famous Trainers
The “Incredibly Pretty Girl”, Whitney, has just recently begun to battle and a pure talent she is to say the least as she soon attracted the Pokémon League’s attention which granted her the title of Gym Leader. Her very own training and battling space, is located in Goldenrod City in Johto, a spacious Gym constructed in the shape of a Clefairy! However, she is not alone in this task as many other young girls have joined the Gym and are in fact quite a challenge.
Whitney and her apprentices are using cute Pokémon of the Normal Type in order to confront all worthy trainers that step into the Gym to claim the Plain Badge in order to reach and battle the Elite Four. However, cute, these Pokémon do not lack in strategy for the least.
Whitney utilizes her Clefairy which is able to mess with the trainer’s strategy, using Encore and Mimic, often followed by Metronome. If Clefairy is defeated, Whitney relies on her all-powerful Miltank. With attacks such as the absolutely annoying Attract, the damage-increasing Rollout and Milk Drink to restore her health, Miltank is usually a difficult challenge, but still not impossible.
If defeated, Whitney throws a childish tantrum, unwilling to give the Plain Badge to the victor. However, after calming down, not only will she grant the winner the badge but also the Technical Machine 45, Attract which makes a Pokémon of the opposite gender become infatuated with the user.
Not only the main character’s -from Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald version- father, but also the Leader of Petalburg City’s Gym, in Hoenn, Norman has travelled from Johto along with his family which resides in Littleroot Town, and established a Gym in the aforementioned city. Friendly, generous and helpful, he was able to obtain fans in no time, some of which can be heard cheering for him in Lilycove City’s fan club, and numerous trainers who eagerly await challenges at the gym; some of them claim that the trainers of Petalburg City became much stronger since Norman’s arrival. In order for a trainer who wishes to have the necessary badges to reach the Elite Four and claim a position as Champion, he must first obtain the Balance badge given away by the all-powerful Norman, after defeating his excellently trained Normal Pokémon! But before this, he is thrown into a challenge to defeat all sub-leaders in various thematic battles. The sub-leaders in question, utilize Normal Type Pokémon as well, but make use of X-Stat items too! Each room reveals a brand new challenge: the Accuracy room, the One Hit KO room, the Defense room, are simply a mere taste of what awaits the trainer when he finally reaches the ultimate challenge, Norman!
Norman makes use of Normal Types as mentioned above, some of them are Vigoroth and Linoone, but his strongest Pokémon and obvious choice, is the Hero-rated Slaking, which can knock out any Pokémon with ease. However, Slaking has a big disadvantage: it only attacks once every two rounds. The trainer has to take advantage of this and knock it out as soon as possible before receiving any lethal hit. However, Norman does rely on Super Potions as well to keep his creatures going. Once he defeated, he not only grants the victorious trainer with the Balance Badge, but also the Technical Machine, Facade, a Normal Type move that increases in power when the Pokémon using it, is affected by a special status condition.

… that a male Smeargle could practically teach to a Pokémon that belongs to the Ground Egg Group, up to four different Egg moves, by Sketch-ing them?
… that Snorlax now has a baby form, known as Munchlax?
… that Miltank, Chansey/Blissey and Kangaskhan are all females while Tauros are all males?
… that three out of a total of five Pokémon that evolve into their highest forms with the use of a Moon Stone, belong to the Normal Type? These are Clefairy, Jigglypuff and Skitty!
… that all half Normal types actually negate their weakness to Fighting because of their secondary type?
… that Slaking has the highest base stat in Attack in the games so far, which is of an outstanding value of 160?
… that Chansey has the lowest physical stats which are of a value of 5?
… that three Normal Type Pokémon have their own, unique items? These are Ditto with Metal Powder, Chansey with Lucky Punch and Farfetch’d with Stick!
… that Kecleon and Castform are both basic Normal type Pokémon with the unique abilities, Color Change and Forecast, respectively which change their type under certain conditions?
… that Chansey/Blissey and Miltank are the only Pokémon that can restore another Pokémon’s Hit Points by using Softboiled or Milk Drink respectively, when out of battle?
… that eventhough Castform does not change its type during Sandstorm, its Weather Ball attack changes into Rock Type?
… that compared to all the other types, the Normal Type has the most moves and almost 2/5 of the total amount of moves?
… that certain moves such as Bite which is now considered a Dark Type move, used to be of the Normal type in the Color Generation?
… that the Technical Machine 01 in the Color Generation was the Normal Type move, Mega Punch and that in the generation thereafter it still remained a punch? These are Dynamicpunch and Focus Punch!
… that the move Headbutt used to work out of battle as well in the Metal Generation, whereas now it doesn’t?

Tnanks a lot! Fortunately some of the other types do not require so much work so I believe they will be coming sooner than expected!

Congrats, it isn't so easy to join all that information and try give it some internal structure. All the things said may seem to be easy to know (at least for me ^_^U), but its not so easy to remember about it all.
Oh, perhaps you could talk about the irregular behaviour of move Present on 2nd gen., its a Normal move as well (perhaps in the "have you ever noticed…" section), and could be interesting for other readers as well ^_^.
shinneymeowth001 @ 19/01/2006, 06:25:28 pm
Very interesting. I never knew about the pink bow or that TM01 is always a punch.
OFF TOPICmaybe there shiould be a page on what people think Munchlax's new attacks are

I'd like to borrow a quote from That's So Raven:

This is great! Can't wait for the one for Fire! (Why? 'Cause Fire and Dragon are my favorite types!)
DogEars @ 09/06/2006, 06:20:35 pm
wow, awesome info. i know it takes a while to do all this. can't wait for all the other 16 types! (especially the psychic, dark, and dragons types)
Kumori-sama @ 25/06/2006, 01:11:22 pm
Wonderful guide. Ever since third gen began I've been looking for a guide built like this one. However, one tiny little error- on the Moonball description, you said the White Apricorn is used to make the Moonball. While white is often associated with the Normal-Type, the White Apricorn makes the Fast Ball. The Yellow Apricorn makes the Moonball. Fix that one little detail and this is the ultimate Normal-Type guide.
Eraleas @ 09/07/2006, 01:45:53 pm
Thanks for the comments and corrections. It does take a long time to type all this. I know I'd promised a Fire Element article which never showed up, but I firmly believe that I will sit down and start typing once more after this big break I had…
Carnivine @ 27/06/2007, 12:10:16 am
I like a lot of grass types (Carnivine, the Roselia family, and Cherubi to name a few.) Why did this great idea stop? Which trees in Sinnoh have the highest possibility of having a munchlax?
Eraleas @ 03/12/2007, 12:20:49 pm
As I am kinda back in the game, I will try and update Normal with the new generation and start creating additional Elements people. Just hang in there till I get round to buying Diamond and learning about the new generation.
Bulba @ 28/03/2008, 01:22:03 am
Hey, well done! That must have taken alot of work. I perfer Dragons, but I always liked Normals. You have done alot of reasearch, and I respect that. Can't wait for the next articles!

Rock ON :D
White Phoenix @ 31/07/2009, 03:32:41 am
I believe Eraleas intends each type to have its own guide. However, it has been two years! Please continue and finish this series soon. Also please update up to the fourth generation.
