- Base Stats
HP Attack Defense Sp.Atk Sp.Def Speed - Description
- Alakazam a very popular Psychic type Pokémon despite its horrible Defense and Hit Points. It excels in Speed and Special Attack which, along with his varied movepool, make him one of the best Special Sweepers around.
- Strategy against Alakazam
- Alakazam’s main weakness is his Defense which teamed with his low Hit Points mean an almost instant KO. However, Alakazam is extremely fast and is able to avoid most attacks targeted at it. Fast and powerful Pokémon like Aerodactyl are one of the best ways to turn the tables around. The use of Extremespeed is also considerably good, especially when STAB-ed.

Role #1: Special Sweeper

Petaya Berry (Special Attack increases when Hit Points drop low)- Nature
- Timid (+Speed –Attack)
- Effort Points
- 252 Special Attack, 252 Speed, 6 HP
- Moveset
- Strategy
- This is one of the most usual Alakazam’s movesets seen around making use of Calm Mind to further boost its special stats, followed by the powerful Psychic attack and two of the element punches, mainly depending on the rest of your teams. I would recommend Ice and Thunder over Fire Punch. If you don’t like Calm Mind you could of course, replace it with the third elemental punch.
Role #2: Trickbander
- Item Held
Choice Band (Powers up one move, which becomes the only usable one.)- Nature
- Timid (+Speed –Attack)
- Effort Points
- 252 Speed, 129 Defense, 129 Special Attack
- Moveset
- Strategy
- This moveset is less common but it actually works. Use Trick to swap the Choice Band you are holding and follow up with either Encore or Disable, Encore being way more accurate. Be very careful when using this tactic! Using it against a Physical Sweeper would most probably mean suicide and you should always predict a switch after this. It would be best combined with Umbreon’s Mean Look and Baton Pass combo.
Egg Moves
These are the moves Abra can learn through breeding with Pokémon of the Humanshape Egg Group. Click here for the Pokémon it can get them from.
Training Grounds
This section is to advise you on the areas in which you can train for the acquisition of the Effort Points presented above. It is recommended you use 10 vitamins on the stat you desire to raise. Do not use vitamins on stats that require less than 100 Effort Points. Equip the Macho Brace on your Pokémon to speed up the process even more.

Contests
- Item Held
Blue Scarf- Nature
- Mild, Modest, Rash or Quiet
- Contest Moveset
- Fire Punch [Beauty]
- Ice Punch [Beauty]
- Sunny Day [Beauty]
- Shock Wave [Cool]
The main purpose of the above moveset is to use the excellent Beauty combo Fire Punch and Ice Punch make with each other. Not only are they both Beauty moves with a very good appeal, but they both are part of the combo which means that they should be used every two rounds. Sunny Day is there in case you need it and combos with Fire Punch, while Shock Wave is there as a filler, just in case you wish to use it when placed first in the turn of appeals.
Useful Links: If you are not familiar with game language used above, read through the Stats & Training Guide, the Team Building Guide and the Egg Group Guide. More guides shall be added soon to help you out. If you have suggestions on additional movesets for either Battles or Contests, please post them in the Comments section. I will then evaluate them and probably add some of them, giving you credit.

I would have:
Psychic
Recover
Calm Mind
Fire Punch
Fire punch is good for using on his weaknesses (bug, dark, etc.)
Zeva @ 07/01/2007 at 06:33:26 pm
I would have:
Hyperbeam
Protect
Recover
Shadowball
Recover would help recover what was lost after hyperbeam
Adam Francis @ 25/03/2007 at 11:01:14 am
Alakazam is one of my favourite pokemon of all times, if I could choose any psychic pokemon, I would choose Alakazam!
andrew @ 12/04/2007 at 02:06:11 am
i chose:
psychic
confusion
recover
psybeam
Rapha @ 05/05/2007 at 03:21:08 am
In my opinion alakazan is the strongest psychic pokemon , and it doesn´t have so many weaknesses, but you have to be careful, because it can be easily KO by its "predators" and what we called "tank pokemon". By the way, alakazan has many ways to be be used, so , choose the best one that helps you and your group to defeat your opponent.
That´s all i know about alakazan, hope it can be helpful at least for begineers :)
Baines @ 11/05/2007 at 07:35:39 am
Recover isn't that useful with Alakazam's low Sp Def and really low Def.
The punches are out as in 4th gen they are now physical.
Calm Mind can work but Alakazam has a high Sp Atk to begin with, a boost of it's Sp Def will not save it from a super effective attack and you give up the possibility of a super effective attack on your opponent…i.e. another attack.
Hyperbeam gives up Alakazam's speed advantage, can miss, allows for a switch, and may be useless if a super effective move is used on him first.
Protect requires prediction and ultimately not save you in most cases and loses you an attack type same as Calm Mind.
Using all psychic moves will get you killed…for example Umbreon.
try this set:
Guard Swap
Psychic
Shadow Ball
Drain Punch(wish there was a better fighting option)
Rash nature
31 IVs Special Atk/Spd
0 IV in Sp atk and Def
haven't tried it out yet so let me know if it doesn't work
perhaps you can do the usual Alakazam special sweeper IV set and just use Guard Swap on special walls.
Baines @ 11/05/2007 at 07:39:37 am
take back what I said about Hyper Beam I still don't like it but it doesn't require a charge, you just lose your next turn
And without Guard Swap Drain punch might be better swapped out with Focus Blast though it's worse then Hyper Beam, but at least it's fighting
moomooman @ 03/06/2007 at 04:29:05 pm
I would choose:
Hyper Beam
Recover
Fire Punch
Ice Punch
NUNYABUSINESS @ 13/06/2007 at 07:57:17 pm
alakazams EXTRTEMELY low attack is nearly useless but since you really need a fighting attack to take out those pesky dark types you should use a sp. atk like focus blast or hidden power (fighting)
i would try
psychic
focus blast
gaurd swap
recover or miracle eye
visitor @ 14/09/2007 at 10:40:46 pm
About Alakazan… you might want recover, becose then it can defeat Blisley 1on1. If "Zam" lacks recover Blisley will eat it alive.
Annonymous @ 15/09/2007 at 04:28:59 am
I would have
Phychic
Shadowball
Fire punch
recover
This way you have a power move, If you get low on health you can get it back, And you have an advantage against bug and ghost, both of which are good against phychic.
codyyyy @ 23/09/2007 at 12:43:04 am
the moves i would have are:
hyper beam
confusion
psybeam
psychic
oh yeah
Victor @ 20/10/2007 at 07:19:10 pm
the moves i would have are:
Rain Dance
Psychic
Tunderbold
Calm Mind
fist Calm Mind, then Rain Dnce to boost T-bold, and then T-bold or Psychic, you choice
ayed @ 21/10/2007 at 10:18:07 pm
victor alakazam can't learn thunder/bolt only thunderpunch wich gains no benefit from rain dance and since it's physical combined with alakazams useless attack stat you shouldnt use it.
using hyper beam with 3 psychic attacks is also bad because tyranitar would kill it and hyper beam requires a turn recharge after use wich means that the opponent can use 2 attacks against it and with garbage def and hp its nearly always a ko. and if you kill a pokemon with hyper beam the opponent can send in a physical sweaper and ohko you whilst you can't switch out or attack due to he turn recharge.
if you want something to counter dark stick with focus blast.although 70 accuracy isnt great it can ohko an opposing dark type 90% of the time.
it also stops tyranitar from entirely walling it.combine this with shadow ball and nothing resists the combo.guard swap also isnt too great because alakazam got too less hp to take some hits even if its gets the def of crescellia it would get 2hitko'ed
ayed @ 21/10/2007 at 10:20:19 pm
i suggest this moveset:
psychic
shadow ball
focus blast
recover/calm mind
trait:sychronize
hold item:choice specs/life orb/petaya berry/salac berry/focus sash
recover is here for blissey and other pokemon who try to stall it
life orb is because alakazam isnt lasting long anyway so the recoil doesnt matter too much choice specs gets a strong hit but leaves you stuck with one move.focus sash is because most physical attacks 1hitko.
the berries are because alakazam nearly always loses 75% or more health from a strong attack.
Chrome @ 22/11/2007 at 10:49:20 am
Sweeper:
Psychic
Charge Beam
Focus Blast
Recover/Skill Swap
First, The punches are now physical attacks. Waste of time for Alakazam.
Second, Why Thunderpunch when you can use the wonderful Charge Beam and not only do damage but have a high chance of raising your special attack!!!!
You would need a good fire attack for the Steel stallers and bugs that kill Alakazam … but better is Focus Blast. It uses special attack, as a fighting move is good against Steel and *Dark* ;) yes it only has a 70 Acc. But I can live with that for the 120 Power and the chance to lower Sp Def even more.
For the fourth move you could use Recover ( Most common ) but Skill Swap can be very nasty when used right. Particularly with certain builds of pokemon who capitalize on their Ability.
Drapion loses his Sniper … and Alakazam BECOMES a sniper? Ouch.
Or better yet … Blissey loses Serene grace and all the sudden Focus Blast often lowers special defense and Charge beam almost always raises SpAtt?!? Can you say OUCH!
What is more Blissey doesn't really have the physical strength to take Alakazam out before Alakazam Charge beams his SpAtt to 1000.
Skill Swap works wonders if you get the right skill … but something like Iron Fist from a Hitmonchan only hurts Hitmonchan, doesn't help Alakazam much.
On the other hand even a Bibarel's Simple ( if someone can find a reason to use Bibarel -- I can't ) would be awesome on Alakazam. Three charge Beams and you now have 1000 SpAtt! 3 Calm minds and you are 1000 in both SpAtt and SpDef.
*sighs* If only Bibarel got a Follow me then it could be used in Doubles.
noctowl123 @ 01/12/2007 at 09:44:29 pm

Stracker @ 22/12/2007 at 11:57:22 am
well alakazam is a very good special sweeper , he has a wonderfull speed and special attack, for him i have this moveset:
-Psiquic
-Shadow Ball
-Focus Blast
-Calm mind
this set works like this , first calm mind then psiquic if there is not a dark type , for dark types focus blast , shadow ball for ghost and anothers psiquics , for blissey is focus blast, his high special attack and speed make him a hard opponent to counter.
pokemon master @ 20/01/2008 at 10:36:01 pm

Rajiv @ 12/07/2006 at 06:02:48 am
for Alakazam's moveset as a sweeper you could use:
Psychic
Thunderpunch / Ice Punch
Thunderpunch / Ice Punch
Recover
incase Alakazam gets low on HP
