Milotic

Sets

Standard Bulky Water

Item Held
Leftovers
Nature
Bold (+Defense, -Attack)
Effort Points
240 Defense - 148 HP - 122 Special Attack
  • Surf
  • Ice Beam
  • Hypnosis
  • Recover

This set has been the standard for Milotic in Advance and remains unchanged in D/P. With Hypnosis becoming 10% more accurate, Recover and awesome tanking abilities, Milotic will really slow down your opponent's team. Surf is obviously here for STAB and Ice Beam is mainly for the Dragons. About the EP spread and the nature now, the ones suggested above are the standard as it allows you to survive Garchomp's Earthquake after a Swords Dance and OHKOs it with Ice Beam (assuming max IVs). However, they may be changed according to your preference depending on what you want your Milotic to counter. Another suggested spread is 252 HP - 252 Special Defense - 6 Special Attack with a Calm Nature which makes Milotic a fine SpecsMence counter.

Mirror Coat

Item Held
Leftovers
Nature
Bold (+Defense, -Attack)
Effort Points
252 HP - 232 Defense - 26 Special Attack
  • Surf
  • Mirror Coat
  • Ice Beam
  • Recover

Much like the previous set, but functions differently. You have to try to bring your Milotic in on a Will-O-Wisp/Toxic or just switch in on Toxic Spikes to activate Marvel Scale. Then, you'll have a huge Defense stat, forcing your opponent to hit you with a Special Attack. Then, Milotic can counter that hit with Mirror Coat and Recover off the damage. Sure, not as reliable as the first set, but it can score an unexpected KO.

You may ask why not use Flame Orb instead of Leftovers and hope for a status inducing move by the opponent. The reason is really simple. The passive damage that Milotic will take each turn will eat its HP faster than you thought giving it problems against powerful hits.

Sleep Talker

Item Held
Leftovers
Nature
Bold (+Defense, -Attack)
Effort Points
252 HP - 232 Defense - 26 Special Attack
  • Surf
  • Rest
  • Sleep Talk
  • Ice Beam

With Rest activating Marvel Scale, Milotic makes a great Physical Wall. However you must be able to predict when you'll need to use Rest as a single mistake can get your Milotic knocked out.

Other Possible Options

Other than Surf and Ice Beam, Dragon Pulse and Hidden Power Electric are the only useful Special moves Milotic can get, but their use is occasional at best. Toxic is also a move that you should consider using over Ice Beam if your team has no Salamence/Garchomp problems. Milotic can annoy with Confuse Ray too if you want. Light Screen gives a nice Special Defense boost to the rest of your team and Safeguard prevents status inducing moves. This is not always good though as you'll want to activate Marvel Scale most of the time. Finally, Haze is an option but Vaporeon and Weezing are much better at it.

Counters

Metagross and Electivire's Thunderpunch is probably the best way to take Milotic down if it hasn't activated Marvel Scale. A Zapdos with Sleep Talk is also an awesome counter as it has no problem getting a Hypnosis too. Raikou can Substitute to avoid Hypnosis, Calm Mind up easily and OHKO. Magnezone can use Substitute and hit as well.

Charge Beam Cresselia makes a quite good counter. Blissey can wall Milotic while waking up any Pokémon affected by Hypnosis with its Aromatherapy. Empoleon and Starmie's Grass Knot, Ludicolo's Energy Ball, Abomasnow's Wood Hammer and even a Life Orb boosted Energy Ball/Thunderbolt by Gengar will do the job. Finally, most Rest + Sleep Talk users won't have many problems against Milotic.

Opinion & Notes

Unfortunately, the generation jump gave Milotic a lot of new things to worry. Physical Electric and Grass moves, Tyranitar's Special Defense boost, Choice Specs boosted Draco Meteor and Garchomp's Life Orb boosted Earthquake are not going to help Milotic walling whole teams as it did in Advance. Certainly, it got a 10% boost in Hypnosis' accuracy but compared to Slack Off that Slowbro gained and to Stealth Rock and Avalanche that Swampert did, it's not that much. However, Milotic is still a pretty solid defensive option when used correctly.

Note that Hypnosis and Mirror Coat cannot be used in the same set.

tyranitar got a sp. def boost? i never noticed, i dont think mine did, actually. would this have effected my tyraniter if it came off of advance?

Ninjomewtwo @ 11/12/2007, 11:39:35 pm

When Sandstorm is active, all Rock-type Pokémon have their Sp.Def. raises by 50%. And since Tyranitar activates Sandstorm the moment it comes in, it has that boost most of the time.

Tony @ 16/12/2007, 07:36:52 am

someone forgot to Suggest Dragon Pulse for Milotic to use against a Palkia since Ice Beam isn't good enough

Darii @ 18/12/2007, 01:41:49 am

Milotic won't be competing in the same tier as Palkia is.

Pikachu @ 21/12/2007, 12:05:07 am

Milotic is a water pokemon and everyone hates water type.RIGHT!They are to wet!:(

Sheraz @ 28/12/2007, 04:23:45 pm

Which berries are needed to evolve a bold febas with hypnosis?

KingDedede @ 30/12/2007, 01:19:07 am

So, does that mean that when Hail is in effect, Ice type pokemon get a sp. def boost as well? or defence, but it is certain that it doesnt boost ice moves 'cause i already tried that.

Ninjomewtwo @ 03/01/2008, 11:10:57 am

@ Sheraz: Dry berries do it.

@ KingDedede: No, Hail doesn't boost anything.

@ Tony: Check the guide again. "Other than Surf and Ice Beam, Dragon Pulse and Hidden Power Electric are the only useful Special moves Milotic can get, but their use is occasional at best." But anyway, Darii is right, Milotic will never face a Palkia in standard matches.

KingDedede @ 06/01/2008, 03:20:37 pm

But in my case, Milotic would face Palkia in a standard match, since they allow any pokemon to be used in a standard battle on PBR, so I have to deal with them all the time when I battle online. I don't have a Palkia counter, but I have a Dialga counter that has saved me several times.

dragon master red @ 06/01/2008, 09:00:52 pm

milotic is pretty…(drool) wait what the heck!! milotic are awesome. i think teaching milotic dragon pulse can do some good too tho…

speedsstacker @ 13/01/2008, 08:57:31 pm

HELLO i was wondering if a good moveset for milotic would be: hiddin power (ground or rock), blizzard, brine, and water spout, holding a splash plate. because blizzard helps ageats grass types hiddn power (ground or rock) helps ageats electric types, brine because i

Gecko.jsc @ 23/02/2008, 01:04:46 am

To evolve Feebas you must feed it Pokéblocks or Poffins made from really good dry berrys. The Pamtre berry is the best, but Wiki, Kelpsy, Hondew and Cornn are also good. Once its beauty is at the max, level it up and watch it evolve into Milotic! I hope this helps anyone who is stuck.

Iggy Sent Me @ 27/05/2008, 10:55:45 pm

Correction, Hail DOES have an effect. It gives Blizzard 100% acc and gives it a 50% chance of breaking through protect and detect.

mohamed ali @ 24/06/2008, 05:07:21 pm

A modest Milotic is a great sweaper yet people only use it to wall, if its speed is a problem then a timid with choice scarf is good enough to even outrun an adamant Infernape.

mohamed ali @ 25/06/2008, 09:00:09 am

Note that Hypnosis and Mirror Coat cannot be used in the same set.

Yes they can!

All you have to do is get a feebas, breed it with a poil/wrath/whirl/toed that has hypnosis
got to the move tutor in the battle frontier, with enough BP ask here to teach your Milotic Mirror Coat, migrate the milotic to DP.

ExplorerAce @ 28/07/2008, 03:57:08 am

Also you could put some EVs in SDef on the Mirror Coat set to make a very powerful Specsmence counter.

ExplorerAce @ 28/07/2008, 05:04:38 pm

One question…
When it says that Mirror coat will attack with double the move's power, does it really mean the move's base power or the damage caused by the attack?

ExplorerAce @ 28/07/2008, 05:29:45 pm

And if Mirror Coat does go on power, does it include STAB?

Mitha @ 14/08/2008, 01:58:52 pm

the evolution of feebas, I like this pokemon because so strong, interisting n beautiful.

Cradily @ 09/10/2008, 06:31:25 pm

Ace, it means that the exact numerical damage is doubled.

Milotic @ 10/06/2009, 04:32:53 pm

Milotic@Leftovers
Calm, 252 HP, 6 SpA, 252 SDef
Mirror Coat
Surf
Ice Beam
Recover

Lightning Fox @ 12/07/2009, 06:15:58 am

If you intend on using a Milotic with Mirror Coat, don't give it too many Sp. Def. EV's. If you take the damage, then that amount will be doubled back to your opponent, so you can distribut any excesses to Defense, HP or even Speed and Special attack. If it's done right, even Alakazam and Latias can be OHKO'd by your counterattack and you'll still have the power to take out almost any Pokemon with a Water or a quad-Ice weakness in one go.

milotic @ 01/08/2009, 03:49:28 pm
