Garchomp

Sets

Swords Dance Sweeper

Item Held
Life Orb
Nature
Jolly (+Speed, -Special Attack)
Effort Points
252 Attack - 252 Speed - 6 HP
  • Dragon Claw
  • Earthquake
  • Fire Fang
  • Swords Dance

When somebody takes a look at Garchomp's movepool, this set is the first that pops to their mind. Two awesome STABed moves, powered up even more by Swords Dance, able to destroy a whole lot of OU Pokémon, with Fire Fang as backup for hitting Skarmory and Bronzong, preventing them from walling you. While it seems as a usual, predictable Physical Sweeping set, Garchomp can deal great ammounts of damage with it. Life Orb further boosts the damage output.

ScarfChomp

Item Held
Choice Scarf
Nature
Adamant (+Attack, -Special Attack)
Effort Points
252 Attack - 252 Speed - 6 HP
  • Outrage
  • Earthquake
  • Fire Blast
  • Stone Edge

With an Attack stat of 394 and a Speed boosting item that makes Garchomp faster than anything but other Scarfers, it becomes a real terror. Outrage can rip whole team apart once their Physical Wall is out. Fire Blast helps on knocking out the most famous Wall, Skarmory. Earthquake is there for STAB and Stone Edge will take care of Gyarados. Despite Outrage's 180 base power (after STAB), Stealth Rock support is essential as most bulky Pokémon are not OHKOed by it.

ChainChomp

Item Held
Life Orb
Nature
Naughty (+Attack, -Special Defense)
Effort Points
252 Special Attack - 240 Speed - 16 Attack
  • Draco Meteor
  • Fire Blast
  • Swords Dance
  • Earthquake

At first glance, this is a stupid set focusing on Garchomp's weakest stat. However, this insane set is even better than Tyraniboah was in Advance. Not only it can attack from both sides of the spectrum, but it does it effectively too. After Swords Dancing once, most opponents will expect a strong Physical move, switching to their Physical Wall. Then, a Life Orb boosted Draco Meteor or Fire Blast will hit them unexpectedly, emptying their HP bar. Most of Garchomp's counters are 2HKOed by Draco Meteor, with Stealth Rock down, you can ensure that. Earthquake is here to take advantage of Swords Dance and for killing those Special Walls that think they've predicted your Draco Meteor.

If max Speed IV isn't the case, take those few Attack EPs and stuff them in Speed. You'll always need to hit 300 Speed so that you're faster than Modest SpecsMence and other base 100 Speed Pokémon.

SS Chomp

Item Held
Brightpowder
Nature
Jolly (+Speed, -Special Attack)
Effort Points
252 Attack - 252 Speed - 6 HP
  • Dragon Claw
  • Earthquake
  • Swords Dance
  • Substitute

Probably the most annoying Sweeper that a Sandstorm based team could get. Combining its Sand Veil ability with Brightpowder, Garchomp will be able to evade some moves. To even help itself stay alive for more time while wrecking havoc, Substitute will keep away those hits that manage to break through Sand Veil and Brightpowder. Dragon Claw and Earthquake are obviously in this set for STAB. The only Pokémon that can scare this Garchomp away are Skarmory and Bronzong, so teaming it up with Magnezone is actually a quite good idea since Magnezone is also immune to Sandstorm. Of course, you can use this Garchomp out of a Sandstorm team too as Tyranitar and Hippowdon are everywhere in the OU metagame.

Other Possible Options

Garchomp's only other noteable Physical moves are Crunch and Poison Jab, they could be used for hitting specific Pokémon like Cresselia and Ludicolo but other than that, Dragon Claw/Outrage are enough.

A Garchomp with Choice Band could be used but since it can easily pull of a Swords Dance, there's no reason to bother with it. Well, Garchomp does have some moves like Toxic and Stealth Rock but, honestly, I don't think there is somebody out there who's going to make a support Garchomp. Finally, Yache Berry is an option, but it sacrifices Life Orb's power.

Counters

Ice Beam is obviously Garchomp's biggest fear. Pokémon like Slowbro, Milotic and Suicune that can take a Swords Dance boosted Earthquake and survive are counters to the first set. Starmie can OHKO with Ice Beam while Garchomp sets up. Swampert and Rhyperior's Avalanche can get the job done too. Cresselia can also switch in on predicted Earthquakes are either KO with Ice Beam or set up a Reflect for the rest of the team.

ScarfChomp is countered easily by Skarmory and Bronzong as long as they avoid Fire Blast. Those two Pokémon can also counter the Sandstorm Garchomp set. Again, Cresselia can switch in and threaten with Ice Beam, but it fears Outrage.

As far as ChainChomp goes, Light Screen Zapdos is an excellent counter. It can take hits and Roost off the damage. Same thing can be done by Togekiss as well. Once again, Cresselia could possibly switch in but it will need a great deal of Special Defense EPs and the lack of a recovery move hurts her.

Opinion & Notes

Garchomp came to claim the position of the best Physical Sweeper by Tyranitar and it really does it. After a Swords Dance, nothing can switch in without getting some good damage. With its fantastic type coverage and that Sand Veil ability that always seems to work when it is least expected, it can become a really pain to every team. And of course, never forget the ChainChomp as it can end the game if you don't predict its moves well.

Note that Outrage is an egg move.

I don't like the third moveset (the ChainChomp one) because its just too obvious that Chomp's Sp. Attack is extremely low, and putting EVs into Sp. Attack just balances out the rest of his stats (lowering attack).

Ninjomewtwo @ 07/01/2008 at 12:52:17 am

@ Havoc: What you said plus surprising your opponent who brings their physical wall in and get it OHKOed/2HKOed by Draco Meteor or Fire Blast. And if they understand what you are doing and bring in something like Blissey, SD + Life Orb + EQ will do. Personally, I love this set.

ICBYH @ 09/01/2008 at 08:54:19 pm

On the Swords Dance Sweeper set, Fire Blast should be listed as an option. Even when running a Jolly nature (-Sp.A), it will do a minimum of 67% to Skarmory, while Fire Fang can only 2HKO after a Swords Dance (if Skarmory doesn't Whirlwind). Fire Blast is also immediately useful if Garchomp happens to switch in through Whirlwind. 85% accuracy is forgivable, knowing that it can scare the metallic tail feathers off of Garchomp's #1 counter.

KingDedede @ 09/01/2008 at 09:46:35 pm

The ChainChomp strategy is proberbly better off on a Salamence, wouldn't you think? As for the top set, do you think that Garchomp could survive pretty much any average hit to be able to use Swords dance? You also forgot to mention that Ice Punch- knowing Weavile also pose a massive threat to Garchomp not holding Choice Scarf. However, you could get an Umbreon to use Agility 1 or 2 times, Double team with the rest of its time then Baton Pass to Garchomp. I also have realized that many teams wield Timid, max sp atk and speed, Hypnosis, Nasty Plot, Swift, and ICY WIND knowing Persian, with X0.5 threat with Technician, and usually holding Focus scarf so it can actually withstand a hit…

ExplorerAce @ 19/02/2008 at 06:19:22 pm

Couldn't you replace the Life Orb with a Muscle Band? You can get multiple Muscle Bands, especially considering you are using it on you Tyranitar or something, boost Physical moves AND will not cost you valuable HP! You have to use it with ChainChomp and other mixed sweeper sets, but otherwise, couldn't you just replace it?

Game Guy @ 22/02/2008 at 04:11:34 pm

Uhm just a little side note. At the counters section it says that Cresselia lacks a recovery move. I don't know where that came from but Cresselia has Moonlight. Though not always as useful Because of sandstorm.
So a Cresselia with moonlight could always be a good counter against Garchomp, especially against a quake locked chomp.

amongtheidiots210 @ 08/03/2008 at 12:38:33 am

I'm surprised none of these take advantage of take use of gaarchomp's decent hp stat. I have had good success by putting 252 att 252 hp and 6 hp with adamant nature and leftovers, then using a ninjask to make up for the speed. It can usually take the first hit and repair itself over time so it's not taken out by ice shard. If i can get a swords dance off with ninjask I can usually whittle my way thru the entire team.

pokemonFan @ 30/03/2008 at 02:40:19 am

I HATE GARCHOMP! HE IS UGLY AND WEAK(EVEN THROUGH HE IS USED BY LEADER CYNTHIS…) HE IS STILL WEAK, I WOULD RATHER HAVE A STRONGER AND POWERFUL POKEMON AS A "POKEMON OF THE WEEK"!

pokemonFan @ 30/03/2008 at 02:42:26 am

DUMB-*** POKEMON!

Kionte Jones @ 30/04/2008 at 07:16:28 pm

These move stes suck. I always have my Grachomp have the moves :
Dragon Rush
Fire Fang
Earthquake
Giga Impact
Item: Wide Lens
Draco Meteor is a good move but it harshly lowers special attack which causes it to get weaker so I just stick with physical type attacks when it comes to Garchomp. Plus the Wide Lens boosts the holders accuracy giving Dragon Rush a better chance to hit.

Young Jeezy @ 14/06/2008 at 04:20:19 am

Crunch
Dragon Rush
Swords dance
Earthquake

Period.

ExplorerAce @ 25/06/2008 at 11:40:37 pm

For ICBYH,

Even though Fire Blast may be better for beating Skarmory, Fire Fang would be better for alot of the other OU pokemon with average Defence. An alternative would be to get a special sweeper with a powerful fire move, like a Modest Azelf with Flamethrower.

takarosthegreek @ 15/07/2008 at 01:08:22 pm

my garchomp has sassy nature holds scope lens for accurasy and i have trained in attack and speed,
attacks:
crunch
earthquake
dragon claw
dragon rush
also in single and double battles i use him with the combination of tyranitar's sand stream for evasiness.
shall i change an attack and is he good?

Altema @ 24/07/2008 at 07:36:51 am

The best moveset for a Garchomp is probably this:

Garchomp@Leftovers/Salac Berry
Earthquake
Dragon Claw
Stone Edge/Substitute/Fire Fang
Swords Dance

Pretty straightforward moveset, use Swords Dance to boost your attack stat sky high, and between Earthquake and Dragon Claw you hit every Pokemon in the game (not counting evolutions) except 2: Skarmory and Bronzong. That's why you might have Fire Fang. Or, with a Sub-Salac combo you would have a speed stat of approximately 450, outrunning almost everything in the game.
