Pokewalker and Activity Meter teardown.
The Activity Meter is pedometer that is to be used with Walk with me!, calculating one's personal life rythm.
The Pokéwalker is an advanced pedometer device bundled with Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver that enhances the gameplay in certain ways.
Both feature an infrared receiver/transmitter that allows them to connect to create a connection between an infrared enabled DS cartridge, and both use an accelerometer instead of a pendulum mechanism.
The disassembly of both devices was actually straightforward (tri-wing screwdriver required) though Pokéwalker's LCD screen was apparently soldered and I didn't risk putting more strain on its connectors. Here they lie side by side, opened up, with their circuits exposed.<

Gday, I want to ask you something. Is this a wordpress site? We're considering changing my weblog from Blogger to wordpress, you think this is feasible? Additionally did you build the following template by yourself some how? Cheers for the assistance!

i wonder if you could take the IR transmitter/receiver from the game cart and install it in a flash cart like a cyclods ievolution so that pokemon HG/SS and Black/White would be able to access it and have complete functionality. the IR function is the difference in true game play for these four games. flash cart developers would never install such a thing due to the virtually non-existent amount of software that actually uses it.

By the looks of it, the pedometer is an accelerometer, that is a tiny silicon chip, good luck tweaking that one :)

I'm just trying to figure out how to open the rest of this thing. Plus find out where the pedometer is and try to somehow make it a lot more sensitive or something to increase the amount of steps/watts I can get with less the effort.

I just want to know the model numbers of the various components, or better yet a circuit diagram would be nice but thats probably pushing it.
I've already cracked open my pokewalker but my eyes are shot and I can't see the small writing on the ICs and the like.
If I could get all the info I needed, then I could start happily hacking the hardware/firmware.

I'm also really interested in the chips. The fact that there are test points make me hope the firmware could be hacked.

is the poke-walker compatable with the other DS/DSi versions of pokemon?
Arty2 @ 29/11/2009, 11:03:43 pm
Quite unsure actually, it's covered by the metallic bridge shown below, and I'd guess the two distinct pieces on the blue portion are the accelerometers. If you think that a closer look on the PCBs might help, I'd be glad to gut them again and take some macro shots.

I would like to know more about the chips on the two PCBs. What is the blue portion of the one board?
